Hundreds of cyclists stripped naked and mounted their bikes for an
extraordinary protest through the streets of London on Saturday afternoon.
Surprised onlookers watched on as hordes of nude and semi-nude
riders set off from six points around the capital as part of a rally against
car culture and oil dependency.
The London stage of the annual World Naked Bike Ride began around
2.30pm, with cyclists reaching the finish point at Wellington Arch by Hyde Park
about three hours later.
The protest, which is also aimed at raising awareness about the
safety of cyclists, sent social media into a spin.
The London stage of the World Naked Bike Ride started from six
separate points around the capital, with nude or semi-nude riders finishing at
Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner around 5.30pm.
Organisers claim the protest, which caused disruption to roads in
the centre of London, is aimed at raising awareness about the safety of cyclists
while calling for action on climate change.
Participants have been urged only to strip naked until the
demonstration moves off so they don't upset authorities.
"There is no law against nudity in Britain, but please don't
exercise your right to nudity in London before the ride, as it will impact on
our ability to make arrangements with police," a light-hearted web post
about the event asks.
"Feel free to undress in the UK at any other time of the
year, as this will not have any impact on the WNBR."
Previous events in London and elsewhere in the world have seen
cyclists coated in body paint, emblazoned with tongue in cheek messages
including "No fumes" and "Burn bras not fuel".
"The finish area will not be a venue for prolonged naked
socialising," organisers warned before the race. LOL!!!
"So when you've found your friends, taken your photographs
and celebrated the highlights of the ride, please get dressed and move on to
continue your celebrations elsewhere." Hahaha…. Crazy English people....
